By Zoila Palma González: On August 26, 2022, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, Mary Ng met virtually with Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Immigration, and Christopher Coye, Minister of State, Finance, Economic Development and Investment.

Ng highlighted Canada’s longstanding partnership with Belize and reiterated the Government of Canada’s commitment to advancing shared priorities on issues such as climate change, helping small businesses grow and become exporters, and female entrepreneurship, according to a statement from the Government of Canada.

Additionally, Ng discussed Canada’s understanding of the economic and climate vulnerabilities of small coastal states and the need to access innovative financing options to ensure countries can take the necessary steps to mitigate and recover. adapt to climate change and pursue development.

Both ministers reiterated their commitment to exploring ways to strengthen the Canada-Belize trade and investment relationship and to continue to support open, rules-based international trade.

“Canada supports the current technical assessment of Belize’s World Bank eligibility for concessional financing from the International Development Association,” the statement said.
